Olufunke Ayotunde Akindele fondly referred to as Jenifa was born August 24, 1976 and was born and brought up by her in Ikorodu, Lagos State. Funke Akindele obtained an Ordinary National Diploma(OND) in Mass Communication from Ogun State University. She went further to study Law from the Lagos State University.
She started working in television before moving over to cinema where her success story began, the actress gained recognition when she starred as Bisi in a Television show called “I Need to Know” between 1998 and 2002.
From there she took acting professionally by putting all her effort into it. This Television program called “I Need to Know” was an initiative of a United Nations Population Fund(UNFPA) which was aimed at giving orientation to the youths especially the girls on how to handle relationship, career and how to make the right decision in life .
She later started appearing in Yoruba movies and has become one of the biggest names in that section of Nollywood. Aside being one of the most high profile cross-over actresses in Nigeria, she is one of those who brilliantly combine producing with acting.
Her biggest break in the area of production came with the release of Jenifa in 2009 produced by her Scene One Productions. The movie went on to become one of the most successful movies in the industry and Funke took advantage of the overwhelming success to release a sequel as well as produce a new television series, 'Jenifa's Diary' currently airing on some TV stations.

Funke Akindele also own a non-profit making, non-governmental Organisation which she named as The Jenifa Foundation . The aims and objectives of this foundation is to help people build their talents and acquiring vocational skills that will help them achieve their dreams.
Funke was briefly married to Almaroof Oloyede. In 2009, Funke Akindele won Africa Movie Academy Award for best Actress in a leading role.
